Happy New Year!
Since you're a Satria fanboy, I'd like to know more about the Malaysian domestic market. I'm holidaying in Malaysia right now, and the brands Proton and Perodua are messing up my mind...

Well.. what do you need to know more about? Well let see here, Proton and Perodua dominated Malaysian road due to our government protectionism towards other car manufacturer. Proton used to rebadge Mitsubishi cars and sell us here cheap. Perodua in other hand, is a subsidiary of Toyota and rebadge Daihatsu cars. That's why Malaysian roads is flooded with this rebranded Kei-cars. This Myvi is the most sought after cars in Malaysia, Due to its kei car ability and cheap maintenance.

Hang on a second, an old Yaris (what the MyVi is anyway) counts as a kei car?

Is the perception of Japanese car brands any different to elsewhere? With the costs of Malaysian cars so low, does it make the Toyotas, Hondas, Kias and Hyundais a semi-luxury brand?
Also, what about the product life cycles? With the little variation on models, parts seem to be plentiful (there are so many old Proton Sagas and Wiras!). Has it altered the new car market for the better or worse?

Yup. Toyotas and Hondas are considered as luxury cars here. Well The Accords and Camry mostly. Due to their high price. Malaysian just consider them as a semi luxury car. Sadly,Some Malaysian still think cars from Korea like Kias and Hyundais are still a piece of crap due to their badge and past history. For me, The new kias like the Picanto or the Rio is quite nice.
Product life cycle? Well bear in mind that the first Proton Car. The Proton Saga were produce from 1985 to late 2007. The life cycles on Proton is quite long. That's said, that's why there are plentiful parts here in Malaysia.
